Don't sell to your LIST!

Don't give someone a list of reasons why they should go buy a product. Rather, you should become the gatekeeper in your niche and only review the highest quality products available, very very infrequently. If you do decide to finally recommend something and it's of extraordinary quality then your list will appreciate that and buy from you over and over again.

Does list size matter?

One of the most commons questions that I get asked in interviews and marketing events is about list size. Ultimately you need customers, so the numbers are important. But, List Building is not a game of getting anyone and everyone on your list. Targeting and quality are far more important than size. I'd rather have 10 qualified people that are really interested in something rather than 100 that don't speak english and have no credit cards. Get my drift?

I build targeted lists!

All of my lists have a very specific demographic in mind. They are qualified and they are relevent to my niche and I never "sell" to them. Other than those simple rules, anything goes. I use all sorts of special tricks, advanced psychological tactics, strategic placements, attention grabbing headlines, marketing vodoo and anything else I can muster up to make sure that a qualified person gets on my list. Just make sure that you don't make a sales page. A sales page and an opt-in page are two drastically different things. I prefer to build up a list of people that will buy from me repeatedly rather than selling them some lame product on day 1 and never hearing from them again.
